STUDENT ADVOCATE

Advocate for international students during changes in enrollment patterns

Authored a report detailing the trend of the decline in international student enrollment in American higher education institutions while simultaneously offering suggestions to ameliorate this downward trend in enrollment.

This report detailed the history and the importance of international students’ presence and contributions in American higher education institutions while simultaneously offering suggestions to ameliorate this downward trend in enrollment. The goal of this report was to identify a disruption in enrollment patterns, trace the history and impact of the targeted demographic, and offer perspective on the future of this disruption.

Importance
Higher education institutions have increasingly relied on international students for funding, low-cost research assistants, and both tangible and intangible benefits of diversity. Three consecutive years of a decline in new international student enrollments can have dire consequences across the American university system as well as the scientific innovation the United States has been a leader of for decades.

  • Perceives the professional self as functioning within a global context

Impact
This report helped contextualize the decline of new international student enrollment. Identifying the disruption in enrollment patterns across American higher education institutions was an important first step, but examining the disruption at the local, national, and global level helped contextualize the importance of retaining this demographic. As someone who has worked with international students the entirety of my professional career and who wants to continue being an advocate for international students, reversing this trend in enrollment is of utmost importance.
